With America's Birthday just around the corner and my nails in dire need of a pick-me-up, I decided to try something new. After (unsuccessfully) attempting a few stars and stripes in varying colors, I tried a gradient/ombre look by combining three of my most patriotic colors. I have to say I am quite happy with the way they turned out!
Fun, no? And it was so easy! To achieve this look for your Independence Day soirée, follow the below instructions. Good luck!
You Will Need:
- White (or pale pink), Blue, and Red nail polish*
- Top Coat polish
- A makeup sponge
- Nail Polish Remover
1). Paint your nails white
I actually don't have white nail polish at the moment, so I had to settle for Essie's fiji, which is a very pale pink. Paint your nails just as you normally would - one or two coats depending on how sheer the polish is.
2). Apply polish to the makeup sponge
Without waiting too long for the white nail polish to dry, paint a thin stripe of the white, blue, and red colors close to each other on the sponge. Don't soak the sponge too much with the polish - you just need enough to lightly dust your nails in order to get the gradient effect.
3). Apply the sponge to each nail until desired effect is achieved
Using a gentle rolling motion, apply the spong to each nail. You may have to reapply polish to the sponge after two or three nails if you feel the colors are fading a bit. Don't worry if the polish doesn't seem to blend right away, just keep dabbing the sponge over your nail and the three colors will blend together to give the gradient effect.
4). Clean up your nail beds
Use q-tips and nail polish remover to carefully erase any polish that got on your fingers while applying the polish with the sponge. Paint a fresh coat of clear top-coat over each nail and voila - Your 4th of July ombre nails are complete!
